Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday vowed to take the country ahead facing all odds, including the manmade and natural disasters.
“Once the major barrier towards implementation of development plans was natural disasters, now we’ve to face manmade disasters alongside the natural ones…we’ll have to take ahead the country facing all these disasters,” she said apparently referring to the ongoing violence and arson attacks amid the BNP-Jamaat’s blockade and hartal programmes.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while presiding over the meeting of the Bangladesh Planning Commission held at her office as its Chairperson. The meeting took place after long 30 years as the last meeting was held in 1984.
PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri briefed reporters after the meeting.
To make Bangladesh a self-dependent and dignified nation, the Prime Minister said, local resources will have to be utilised properly to achieve the targeted outcome without depending on others.
She directed the authorities concerned to speed up the pace of project implementation alongside complementing the development projects within the stipulated timeframe to avoid cost overrun.
Hasina also underscored the need for giving due importance to generating more employments as well as boosting production and marketing of jute and jute-made goods.
The PM’s Press Secretary said the meeting discussed in details taking pragmatic measures to materialise the government’s vision of 2021 and elevate Bangladesh to a developed country by 2041.
He said, the issue of mobilising necessary resources for materialising the plans was also discussed at the meeting.
A proposal for raising the status of Planning Commission members to Senior Secretary and Division chiefs to Secretary also placed at the meeting. Besides, proposals were made to enhance manpower at the Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED), strengthen its monitoring and supervision through setting up offices at the district level.
A total of four presentations were made at the meeting. Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam made a presentation on the overall activities of the Planning Commission as well as strengthening it, while Statistics and Informatics Division Secretary Suraiya Begum made a presentation on the overall activities of the Division while IMED Acting Secretary Md Shahid Ullah Khandker on the overall activities of the Division.
General Economics Division (GED) member of the Planning Commission Prof Dr Shamsul Alam made a presentation on the preparation of formulating the ensuing 7th Five Year Plan (2016-2020). In the presentation, he highlighted the ongoing preparation for formulating the next Plan is going.
