Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday called upon the people to plant more fruit trees.
In a message, on the eve of the ‘Fruit Tree Plantation Fortnight and National Fruit Exhibition’, she wished success of the annual event from June 16 to 30.
The Prime Minister said the importance of fruit trees is immense for meeting the demand for food and nutrition, poverty alleviation, preventing natural calamities and enhancing scenic beauty. The land and climate of Bangladesh are suitable for fruit cultivation, she said.
The country has more than 130 species of fruit trees from where the daily requirements for nutrition could be met easily, she added.
She called for growing mangoes and litchis other areas of the country like in the north so that the country can earn foreign exchanges through exports after meeting the local demand. The Prime Minister urged all to grow fruits round the year on homesteads, roadsides, premises of educational institutions and rooftops in urban areas.
Along with preserving indigenous fruits, all would have to come forward to increase the cultivation of new fruits like strawberry, rambutan, dragon fruit and sweet tamarind.
