BSS, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday urged the countrymen to keep Awami League in power for their prosperity saying the country would go in grip of corrupt people, militants and terrorists if BNP comes to power.
Urging the people to cast their vote for Awami League in the future elections to continue the pace of development, she said, “country’s development would continue only if you cast your vote for ‘boat’ in every election in future.”
“Bangladesh will be turned into a land of corrupt people, terrorists and militants if BNP and its cohorts come to power again,” she added.
The prime minister was addressing a huge public meeting organized by Awami League at Harian Sugar Mills ground at Paba upazila in Rajshahi on Thursday.
Sheikh Hasina said Awami League is the only party which represents the people of Bangladesh. The party has brought nation’s freedom through a long struggle led by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The party will also bring economic emancipation of the people, she said.
She said Bangladesh witnesses real development when Awami League comes to power. Over the last eight years in power the Awami League has pulled five crore people out of extreme poverty, making the country a role model of development. Bangladesh would be economically self-reliant if Awami League remains in power, she said.
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, AL Joint Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, among others, also addressed the meeting chaired by president of Upazila unit of the party Yasin Ali.
Pointing out her government success in eliminating ‘monga’ from country’s northern region, the prime minister said, “we can claim success at least in this area. ‘Monga’ had engulfed the whole region for years. “By the grace of the Almighty we have stamped out the phenomenon.”
“There is no ‘monga’ in country’s northern region now and it will not come back again in future,” she said adding that in some areas, crops were damaged due to flood.
But it will cause no problem as the government has started importing food from abroad to ensure availability of their food. Homes will also be constructed for those who lost their homes in flood, she said adding that the list of the affected families is being prepared.
The Prime Minister arrived here in the morning to attend the passing-out parade of the 34th BCS batch of assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) at the Bangladesh Police Academy at Sarda.
Before addressing the public rally she inaugurated six new projects and laid foundation of 16 others.
Pointing out the country’s socioeconomic progress, the prime minister said, “You have witnessed that the country goes ahead when Awami League comes to power. And, the country goes backward when BNP comes to power. They (BNP) plunder public wealth and lead lavish life.”
The Prime Minister said her government has embarked on massive development programmes for Rajshahi division before any demand was raised from any quarter. As the daughter of the Father of the Nation, she said, “I know what your demand is and how to develop the country.”
“So, there is no need for demanding anything from me,” she said adding that the government has already constructed a dam for protecting Rajshahi from erosion. Projects were taken also for other erosion-prone areas. All roads damaged in recent flood would be repaired, she said urging all concerned to give attention to proper maintenance of the roads.
The prime minister extended her sincere thanks to the audience for attending the meeting in huge number braving heavy rain and inclement weather. “We will never forget your sacrifice and support for Awami League, she said adding that her party will do everything which is needed for development of Rajshahi.
