Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate metro rail and bus rapid transit (BRT) projects on June 26.
He disclosed this at a press briefing at Road Transport and Highways Department on Thursday.
“Hasina will inaugurate the construction work on
BRT project from Shahjalal International Airport to Gazipur terminal which will cost Tk 2,040 crore,” said the minister. He also said there will be 25 stations, 6 flyovers, 4.50km elevated BRT lane from Uttara to Tongi and 16km flat grade on the route. Besides, 18-metre long 100 articulated buses will run on the route. There’ll be a system of electronic smart card for colleting bus fare.
“The Asian Development Bank, French Development Agencyand Global Environment Facility Fund are financing the project alongside the government. The government has completed all the preparatory works and started implementation work as well. We’re expecting that BRT work will be completed by 2018,” said Quader.
He said the preparatory work for metro rail project has already been completed and it is no heading towards implantation. “The 20-km metro rail project will be implemented with financial assistance from JICA. JICA will provide Tk 16,600 crore of the total cost of Tk 22,000 crore,” said the minister.
