Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over Unesco’s 2014 International Literacy Prizes to the awardees this year in Dhaka on September 8, an event going to be held here for the first time.
Usually, the award-giving ceremony takes place in Paris every year, but it is going to be held here this time, said Saida Muna Tasneem, Director General (DG-UN) at the Foreign Ministry, on Sunday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) will host an international conference on ‘Girls Literacy and Education’ in the city marking the International Literacy Day, she said.
Muna Tasneem said Bangladesh is taking the lead role in girls’ education and the Prime Minister is supporting the event.
She said Unesco Director General Irina Bokova is scheduled to arrive here on September 7 to attend the event.
Education Ministers from 12 countries have already been invited to attend the conference and the host is expecting a Dhaka declaration after the conference.
