Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday started her party’s election campaign, addressing a rally at her ancestral home in Tungipara of Gopalganj district.
Thousands of people attended the Prime Minister’s rally. The inauguration was celebrated with colourful processions from 16 unions and municipality areas.
Sheikh Hasina visited the shrine of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara before opening the formal election campaign from her constituency.
She placed a wreath at the Bangabandhu shrine and attended special prayers along with her family and party leaders.
Sheikh Hasina’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana, Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Joint-Secretaries Jahnagir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, organising
secretaries AFM Bahauddin Nasim, BM Mozammel Haque and Ahmed Hossain and MP Sheikh Helal Uddin accompanied her during the time.
The Prime Minister reached Tungipara by road around 2pm on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister’s motorcade left Ganabhaban at 8.23am on Wednesday and arrived in Tungipara via Mawa.
Leaders and activists waited on two sides of the road carrying placards, banners and festoons to support the party symbol ‘boat.’ They chanted slogans supporting their leader. Hasina greeted the crowd in response.
Hasina is contesting the 11th national election from Gopalganj-3, the constituency that covers Tungipara and Kotalipara. She has been elected six times from the said seat.
The Awami League leaders and activists in Kotalipara have been showing their enthusiasm over the election campaign by their party chief.
“Festivity is in the air. Everyone was anxiously waiting for the arrival of their leader. Kotalipara has been decorated for the event,” said Mujibur Rahman Howladar, Joint-General Secretary of the upazila wing of the ruling Awami League.
Hasina will stay overnight at her ancestral home in Tungipara. She will exchange views with local Awami League leaders and activists.
On her way back to Dhaka on December 13, Sheikh Hasina will address rallies at Bhanga circle in Faridpur, Faridpur circle, Rajbari road circle, Manikganj bus stand, Rabeya Medical College and Hospital premises in Dhamrai and Savar bus stand.
AL sources said, after spending a couple of days in the capital for the Victory Day celebration and unveiling the party’s election manifesto, Sheikh Hasina may visit Sylhet to offer prayers at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hazrat Shah Paran (RA).
The party is scheduled to announce the manifesto on December 18, PM’s Political Affairs Adviser HT Imam told reporters at a city hotel on Monday night.
