PM seeks relaxed visa regime from UAE

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday urged the UAE to make the visa regime friendlier for Bangladeshi nationals, especially the business visas.
The Prime Minister made the request when State Minister of the UAE Dr Maitha Salem Al-Shamsi met her at the Jakarta Convention Centre here on the sidelines of the first-ever Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Leaders’ Summit. Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque briefed reporters while PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim and Secretary on the Maritime Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Real Admiral (Retd) M Khorshed Alam were, among others, present at the briefing. In response to the PM’s request, the UAE State Minister informed Sheikh Hasina that she would discuss the matter with her Cabinet colleagues, said Shahidul Haque.
During the meeting, both the Prime Minister and the UAE State Minister discussed various issues of bilateral relations, including the growing relations between the two countries.
Shahidul Haque said the UAE plays an important role in the IORA and they will become its next chair. On completion of the term, Bangladesh will then take over the chairmanship of IORA from the UAE. “So, then there’ll be a new dimension in the relationships between the two countries.”
State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan NobuoKishi also called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Jakarta Convention Centre. The Japanese State Minister highly lauded the steps taken by Bangladesh in combating terrorism and extreme violence. NobuoKishi told the Prime Minister that Japan would send a big delegation to Bangladesh to participate in the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference to be held in Dhaka in April. State Minister for Foreign affairs of India VK Singh also met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Jakarta Convention Centre. During the meeting, VK Singh discussed the upcoming tour of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India in April. “We’re hopeful that it will be a successful tour of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India,” the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary added. Earlier, the Prime Minister attended the opening session on adoption of the agenda and programme of work, summary of reports, Session on Adoption and Signing of the outcome document of the Summit. She also attended the simultaneous signing of IORA Concord by 21 HODs, visited the trade exhibition area accompanied by the President of Indonesia and other heads of delegation and the social launch at the Convention Centre.
