PM orders planned housing in country

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday directed the officials concerned of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works to develop a proper housing system in all parts of the country, including the capital, following a ‘Master Plan’.
She also asked hem to ensure the highest enforcement of the existing laws, including the Bangladesh National Building Code, in construction of buildings.
The Prime Minister gave the directives while delivering her introductory speech at a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works at the
Bangladesh Secretariat. “The government has been working to develop a planned housing system in the country and wants to make sure that no one remains homeless,” she said.
The Prime Minister went on saying, “To do this, the Housing Ministry will have to move ahead with a proper and farsighted master plan in developing housing system in the capital, divisional cities, district and upazila towns so that no new slum area is created.”
About preserving the country’s heritage, she categorically said, “In the name of heritage, there is no need to preserve all the buildings constructed during the British colonial regime. Some buildings might be preserved if those structures are attractive and have historical importance.”
The Prime Minister called upon the Housing and Public Works Ministry officials to make a proper plan and develop standard housing system so that arable land is not used for the purpose saying that this will ultimately create pressure on the country’s food security.
In this regard, she also urged them to keep in mind the family size, population as well as utility services, including gas, electricity and water consumption to be required and sewerage system in the areas while planning for flats.
Terming hospital waste dangerous for public heath, Hasina asked the authorities concerned to make sure that every hospital has its own waste management system while giving permission for setting up any hospital in the future.
