PM opens nine new bridges

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday inaugurated nine bridges in country’s five divisions including Sheikh Russell Bridge in tourist area Kuakata of Patuakhali district.
The Prime Minister simultaneously inaugurated these newly constructed bridges through video conference from her official Ganobhaban residence with the leaders and government officials at concerned Deputy Commissioners’ Office yesterday.
The bridges include six major bridges and three small ones. The major bridges are – Achmat Ali Khan Bridge on Madaripur-Shariatpur-Chandpur Highway in Madaripur, Chandarpur-Sunampur Bridge over the Kushiara river on Golapganj- Bianibazar Road in Sylhet, Sheikh Russell Bridge on Patuakhali-Kuakata highway, Batakhali Bridge on Chakoria-Badarkhali-Moheshkhali road in Cox’s Bazar, Abduz Zahur Bridge over the Surma river in Sunamganj and Barodaha Bridge over the Karatoa river on Gaibandha-Nakaihat-Gobindaganj road in Gaibandha.
Speaking on the occasion the prime minister said the bridges were constructed on the districts’ major roads creating enormous opportunity
for socio-economic development of the people of the areas.
Under Eastern Bangladesh Development Project a total of 18 large bridges are being constructed while under Western Development Project construction of as many as 61 bridges are going on, she said.
The prime minister said good communication network is very important for socio-economic development of a country and for that reason whenever Awami League government came to power, has given utmost importance to development of the communication network.
Sheikh Hasina said her government is striving for ensuring the basic needs of the people where communication plays an important role. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Qader also spoke on the occasion while Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid from Sylhet, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan from Madaripur, State Minister for Finance Abdul Mannan from Sunamganj, President of Patuakhali District Awami League Advocate Shahjahan Mia also spoke through joining the video conference.
Besides, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jun was present while the function was conducted by Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Division MAN Siddiqui.
Prime Minister’s Adviser HT Imam, Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia, Chief Whip ASM Firoz were also present. About the plan of her government to construct a tunnel under the river Jamuna, the Prime Minister said, the government plans to build another route from Dhaka to Northern Region through this tunnel.
This would enhance trade and commerce related activities and create opportunities of marketing of the local products and thereby improve living standard of the people, she said.
While speaking with the leaders of Madaripur and Patuakhali, the Prime Minister regretted that the southern part of the country had been neglected for long time as the people of the region always cast their votes for Awami League. Referring to construction of the Sheikh Russell Bridge in Kuakata, she said Kuakata is one of the most attractive tourism areas in Bangladesh from where one can enjoy the Sun rise and the Sun set.
While talking to leaders of Sylhet she said, Dhaka-Sylhet highway would be turned into four-lanes to make road communication more easier and comfortable.
In this connection, she mentioned that her government always put appropriate importance for the development of Sylhet which is enriched with huge natural resources like gas and tourism attraction. Talking with Sunamganj leaders the prime minister said, 13 more bridges are being constructed across Sunamganj district to ensure better communication system and better living and communication of the people of Haor area.
