Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday formally inaugurated the free distribution of textbooks among students up to the secondary level.
The Prime Minister opened the textbook distribution by handing over a set of books to one student of different classes each up to secondary level under general, madrasah, and technical education boards at a simple ceremony at her official residence Ganabhaban in the morning.
She also handed over a set of books to a visually-challenged student.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman and Prime Minister’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana were present.
On January 1, a number of 32,63,47,923 books will be distributed among the 4,44,52,344 students of class one to nine across the country.
The textbooks will also be distributed free among 7,03000 students of the Vocational Board.
These books have already reached the respective educational institutions.
Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister described the task of printing of such a huge number of books and distributing those among students on the same day as very tough. “Bangladesh has set an example in the world by distributing a huge number of textbooks among the students every year,” she said.
She thanked all those involved in this extraordinary job for their hard work. “This proves if there’s a will there’s a way, too.”
Hasina said, the standard of education in the country has improved a lot after the government started distribution of free textbooks among the students up to secondary level.
“The guardians are now free from the anxiety of buying textbooks, and they feel encouraged a lot to send their children to school,” she said adding that the dropout rate is also decreasing sharply.
In 2013, a total of 26,17,74,606 copies of books were distributed among 3,68,86,172 students across the country up to secondary level.
The Prime Minister said the number of students in the country is increasing thanks to the government measures for distributing free textbooks among the students. “We’re very happy to know the number of students is increasing every year,” she added.
