S A Shofiee, Sylhet :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is looking for a qualified candidate from Awami League for the parliamentary seat of Sylhet-1.
It is said that Sylhet is the spiritual capital of Bangladesh. The party which wins here forms government. Both of the supreme leaders of AL and BNP start their election campaign from this city.
In the National Parliamentary Election -2001, after the death of Humayun Rashid Chowdhury, AL brought Abul Maal Abdul Muhit and was defeated by Saifur Rahman. BNP and Jamayat came to the power that time.
Before that, only Khandakar Abdul Malik from BNP was elected in seat of Sylhet-1 among the 19 seats of the division through the poll of 1991. BNP formed Government then.
Since 2008, Abul Mal Abdul Muhit had been the MP as the representative of this seat and the Finance Minister of AL led Government. He is not contesting in the next election. A close source informs that Muhit’s brother and the former representative of UN, Abdul Momen is going to appear as a candidate here.
The inhabitants of Sylhet want a fresh politician instead of elite one. This is why the AL leader and PM, Sheikh Hasina is now looking for a fresh and qualified person to contest in the next election. She does not want to lose this seat at all as close sources inform.
It is being whispered that many leaders of Sylhet BNP want Tareq Rahman’s wife, Zobaida to be given the nomination from the party. On the other hand, it is perceived that the son of Khandakar Abdul Malek can also go for it.
