Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaves for New York on Wednesday to attend the UN General Assembly (UNGA), where world leaders will meet to adopt a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
She will lead a 60-member delegation on an 11-day tour. They will observe Eid-ul-Azha in the US city. This year marks the end of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The world leaders will meet in New York from Sep 25 to 27 to formulate the new SDGs for the next 15 years. Hasina is scheduled to address the SDG summit on the concluding day. Leaders of 150 countries are expected to attend.
Her Deputy Press Secretary Md Mamun Or Rashid told bdnews24.com that Hasina had represented Bangladesh as prime minister even during the adoption of the MDGs in 2000. At that time, suggestions made by Bangladesh had attracted world attention, he added.
“The world community has lauded Bangladesh’s successes in meeting the MDGs. In the meantime, Bangladesh has also become a middle-income country. So, it is expected that the Bangladesh prime minister’s views will be specially considered at the time of finalising the SDGs,” he said.
Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali had earlier said on the sidelines of UNGA that Sheikh Hasina would also attend a high-level meeting on “peacekeeping” in New York on Sep 28. She will co-chair a meet with US President Barack Obama.
At the gathering, Hasina would make “some commitments” towards the strengthening of peacekeeping activities, the foreign minister said. During her stay in New York, she would be awarded the UN’s highest environmental honour – “Champions of the Earth” – and the International Telecommunication Organisation’s (ITU) award in recognition to Bangladesh’s progress in the IT sector.
