Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 1st Upazila Model Mosque of South Surma in Sylhet On Thursday morning. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated 50 mosques and Islamic cultural centers across the country, including Sylhet, by virtually joining Ganobhaban in the capital.
Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Kazi Emdadul Islam, Sylhet Metropolitan Awami League President FF Masuk Uddin Ahmed, District Awami League General Secretary Advocate Nasir Uddin Khan, Sylhet City Awami League General Secretary Professor Zakir Hossain, South Surma Upazila Parishad Chairman Mohammad Abu Zahid, UNO Md. Abdul Haque and officials of upazila administration and leaders of district and upazila Awami League were present at the inauguration ceremony.
About 900 worshipers will be able to offer prayers together at the Upazila Model Mosque and Islamic Cultural Center on the north side of the Upazila Parishad Complex in Naikhaistha of South Surma Upazila and on the premises of the Upazila Health Complex.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone on April 5, 2016 in the presence of local MP (late) Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury through a video conference at the Model Mosque and Islamic Cultural Center, built at a cost of Taka 1297.21 million at the initiative of the Islamic Foundation and the Ministry of Religion.
The mosque construction project was about to go back due to land issues. The land complex was resolved with the sincere efforts of the then MP Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury. As a result, it has been possible to build the first Upazila Model Mosque in Sylhet district. Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury visited the mosque several times before his death to complete the construction work quickly and in a quality manner. However, he could not see the inauguration.
