UNB, Dhaka :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday night said the Prime Minister has a role in constituting a neutral Election Commission (EC), and hoped that good sense will prevail upon on the government to take proper steps to this end.
“Our chairperson Khaleda Zia gave proposals on forming a stronger Election Commission. We hope the President will consider it. As the head of the ruling party and the head of the government, the Prime Minister also has a big role in this regard,” he said.
Fakhrul made the remarks while talking to reporters at BNP chairperson’ Gulshan office giving his party’s reaction to the Prime Minister’s comment on Khaleda’s proposal on EC. As journalists sought her comment on the BNP chairperson’s proposals on EC, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her press conference in the afternoon said the BNP chief should have apologised to the nation before placing any proposal.
“She [Khaleda] has made her proposal; now she can tell the President about it, and he’ll take the decision…we’ve nothing to say…,” she added. In repose to the PM’s comment, Fakhrul said, “We still hope good sense will prevail upon the government to form a neutral and acceptable Election Commission. We hope they’ll follow the right path.”
The BNP secretary general said their party thinks only a credible and fair election can help resolve the country’s current political crisis. “We think an inclusive and acceptable election can be held if a neutral Election Commission is constituted.” As his attention was drawn to the PM’s comment that there is no possibility of snap polls, Fakhrul said, “We never talked about mid-term polls. We always said the January-5 election in 2014 was questionable. So, an acceptable election is necessary as soon as possible. Those who are now in power will determine when such an election will be held.”
Later, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia held a meeting at her office with senior BNP leaders to work out the party’s strategy to ensure her party mayoral candidate in Narayanganj City Corporation election slated for December 22.
