Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday put emphasis on keeping operative all the rivers of the country, especially six rivers around Dhaka city, by restoring their navigability through dredging.
“It would help develop the country’s communication system and transportation of goods smoothly. Besides, tourist spots would be built on the banks of the rivers through their beautification,” she said.
The Prime Minister expressed the views when a delegation of the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) called on her at her office to submit their recommendations titled “Steps to Keep Rivers Around Dhaka City Including Buriganga Pollution-Free and Increase Flow”.
IDEB President AKMA Hamid led the team. After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury briefed reporters.
The Prime Minister said the aim of her government is to further improve the country’s communication system by saving the rivers and environment.
“To achieve the goal, the IDEB members will have to play an effective role and contribute to develop the communication system and tourism industry of the country,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina also underscored the need for taking realistic plans and implementing those by the IDEB to develop the communication system through protecting rivers and environment of the country.
The Prime Minister mentioned that it was Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who had organized diploma engineers in 1950, and subsequently they got a strong foundation.
