UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has donated Tk 6 crore to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) to procure hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for critically injured patients. The Prime Minister handed over a cheque for the donated money to Project Director of the institute at her official residence Ganobhaban on Sunday evening, PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri said on Monday.
The HBOT will extend most modern treatment facilities to the critically injured patients as the system involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressuriszed room or tube.
It is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, serious infections, bubbles of air in blood vessels, and wounds that will not heal due to diabetes or radiation injury. While handing over the cheque, the Prime Minister said the number of burn patients, particularly the critical ones, are on the rise for various reasons, including political violence, fire incidents and explosions.
She pointed out the flow of patients to NIBPS with critical burn injuries during the vandalism triggered by BNP-Jamaat quarter across the country last year in the name of a political movement. “At that time, the lives of many injured people couldn’t be saved because of decompressing sickness. The new procurement will help resolve the problem providing modern treatment to the patients,” she said.
Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman, Deputy Governor Dr S K Sur Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association Prof Dr M Iqbal Arsnal, NIBPS’ honourary adviser Dr Samanta Lal Sen were, among others, present on the occasion.
