Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, disappointed at the run-down roads in Chittagong, has warned the officials against negligence in development work.
Prime Minister blames watch dog city corporation for the present dilapidated road conditions of the port city. She saidT he work will have to be in good standard. No one will be spared for negligence. We haven’t come in to do corruption and get commission (bribe),” she disclosed it while inaugurating a Chittagong Water and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) project on Sunday at Boat Club premises in Patenga .
She expressed utter disappointment after travelling from the Base to Club through Road No. 11 which is also called the Airport Road. Bridges on two canals on the run-down road have collapsed.
The vehicles use narrow bailey bridges to cross the canals now.
Highlighting her government’s steps for the development of the post city, she said, “I am shocked to see the condition of the roads when I travelled from the Base to this programme.”I don’t know why the roads are in such a bad shape. The road is dotted with pot-holes. The work of the bridges is yet to finish,” she saidThe prime minister said she earlier asked to repair the roads after seeing them in the same condition during a visit two years ago.
She said she asked Chittagong Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin why the roads were not repaired in two years.”These are LGED and city corporation’s duty.
So, we must find why this happened,” she saidThe work to build the bridges on canals No. 15, 7, and 9 at Airport Road in the port city started in 2015 with an estimated cost of Tk 90 million.
Expressing ire over the condition of the road, the prime minister said, “Whose negligence is behind the condition of the road in an important place like Chittagong. I want to know why the holes have not been filled.”The prime minister also praised veteran Chittagong Awami League leader Mohiuddin Chowdhury, who had been elected mayor of the port city three times.
“It’s a fact that the roads and other developments in Chittagon g were done during Mohiuddin Chowdhury’s tenure,” she said Mohiuddin was not present at the function due to his illness , but his wife, Chittagong Mohila Awami League President Hasina Mohiuddin attended it.
Besides Mayor Nasir, Local Government Minister Khandaker Mosharaf Hossain, Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain and Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud were present on the occasion.
