UNB, Gazipur :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday called upon the new generation to acquire higher specialised education on nursing and dedicate themselves to serving the distressed humanity.
“The government and I myself have high respect for the nursing profession, and we give importance to creating educated and trained nurses to ensure quality services at various hospitals,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this while inaugurating the academic activities of newly constructed Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Nursing College at Tetoibari in Kashimpur here.
The Prime Minister mentioned that there is no reason for a Prime Minister to inaugurate a nursing institute. “I’ve been here just to demonstrate how much I respect this profession, and I hope the students will come out from this institute like ‘Florence Nightingales’,” she said.
Criticising the trend of a section of people of going abroad for medical treatment, the Prime Minister said, “They spend huge money on medical care there despite having world-class healthcare facilities in the country’s modern hospitals.”
As international standard medicare facilities are available at the Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Speciallized Hospital, Hasina said she herself would go there for treatment purpose when her doctors would advise her to go abroad.
She said, the soft touches of the nurses help patients get well early when they are on hospital beds although doctors are giving them medicines.
Realising the importance of nurses, she said, her government changed the entire curricula of the nursing education and created the opportunity of higher education like Master’s and PhD degrees for them.
The Prime Minister said her government has taken various steps to create qualified and efficient
nurses who would be able to work at home and abroad availing themselves of job facility.
She recalled with gratitude the great contributions of her Mother Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib who standing beside the Father of the Nation had served the distressed people, particularly the women who were tortured and violated them during the Liberation War.
Not only that, Fazilatunnesa Mujib also played an unforgettable role during all the struggles and movements as well as the great War of Liberation, Hasina said adding that her mother had always inspired Bangabandhu keeping herself behind the scene.
In recognition to her invaluable contributions to the distressed people, the hospital-cum-institute has been named after great woman Fazilatunnesa Mujib, Sheikh Hasina said.
In this connection, the Prime Minister also extended her heartfelt thanks to the Malaysian Prime Minister who himself had attended the inauguration ceremony of the hospital in 2013.
Referring to the historical background of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust, the Prime Minister said it was formed in 1994 for the welfare of the poor people of the country.
Sheikh Hasina said she along with her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, donated Dhanmondi 32 Road’s house and all other inherited property to the trust.
Stipends are being given to about 1,700 poor and disabled students from the trust fund, she said.
Besides, treatment expenses of poor people, including Awami League leaders and workers as well as the wounded persons of the 21st August grenade attacks, are also being met from the trust fund, she added.
Hasina requested the local leaders and Members of Parliament elected from the area to look after the activities of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Specialized Hospital-cum-Nursing Institute.
The Prime Minister also announced to construct an underpass near the institute.
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Convener of Project Committee Prof Dr Syed Modasser Ali, State Minister for Health Zahid Malek, Health Secretary Syed Manzurul Islam, Chairman of Joint Committee Major General (retd) Abdul Hafiz Mallik, President and Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, Malaysia Amirudddin Abdul Sattar, and a student of the first batch of the college, Sadia Farhana, also spoke on the occasion.
