Mongla, the 2nd biggest Sea Port of the country is divided into two parts by the river Mongla, an offshoot of the Pashur channel and the only ferry (of Mongla) links the two parts of the Port. But for want of sufficient navigability in the river (Mongla) the only ferry service depends on the high and low tides.
As a result, the ferry can play only for 4 to 6 hours in 24 hours of a day and it is suspended for the rest periods of time.
Consequently, abnormal traffic jams are created on the both sides of the river every day and sufferings of the traders and people of other professions know no bounds.
It is learnt from the authorities concerned that Mongla Sea Port was shifted from Chalna to Monga in the year 1953.
It was earlier mentioned that the port was divided into two parts till the year 2002. After a long waiting for 49 years that Roads and Highways department linked the 2 parts of the port through introducing a ferry service on the river Mongla in the year 2002. Since then the ferry service was regular and full time for 2/3 years. After that due to the shortage of navigability of the river Mongla the ferry service became irregular. Consequently, ferry service was suspended for 1 to 2 hours in 24 hours. But at present the ferry is playing only for 4 to 6 hours in 24 hours. As a result, the traffic jam is created on the both sides of the river every day and the vehicles cannot cross the river within a short time.
