Plot to kill Hasina Death reference reaches HC

The death reference of the sedition case in which 14 members of banned organization Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji) were sentenced to death for attempting to murder Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000 has reached the High Court for the examination of the trial court verdict.
Officials of the Speedy Trial tribunal-1 of Dhaka brought the documents of the case including the judgment to the HC on Monday afternoon, said Md Saifur Rahman, spokesperson of the Supreme Court.
The HC authorities will now prepare paper books for hearing on the death reference, Saifur Rahman added. If a lower court sentences any person to death in a case, its judgment is examined by the HC through hearing arguments for confirmation of the death sentence. The case documents and judgment reach as death reference to the HC from the lower court as per the relevant provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
A Dhaka court on March 23 this year sentenced 14 members of banned organization Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji) to death in a sedition case filed in connection with the attempt to murder Awami League leader and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Kotalipara of Gopalganj in July 2000.
Judge of the Speedy Trial tribunal-1 of Dhaka, Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman, delivered the verdict in presence of nine accused in a packed courtroom.
The convicts are Md Azizul Haque alias Md Shahnewaz, Md Lokman, Md Yousuf alias Mochhhab Morol, Mochhaheb Hassan alias Rasu, Md Anisul Islam alias Anis, Sarwar Hossain Miah and Sheikh Md Enamul Haque.
