Plea filed seeking extension of Fakhrul`s court appearance time

UNB, Dhaka :A petition has been filed with the Supreme Court seeking extension by eight weeks its earlier order asking BNPacting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, now staying in the USA for treatment, to surrender before lower court in three cases.Fakhrul’s counsel Sagir Hossain Leon filed the pleas with the Appellate Division on Sunday. The Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division is likely to hear the petition on Monday, said Leon.Earlier, the Appellate Division on July 13 upheld the High Court bail for six weeks to the BNP acting secretary general in three violence cases.A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order considering the necessity of Fakhrul’s advanced treatment abroad. The SC came up with the order after receiving a report from a five-member medical team, comprising two surgeons of vascular surgery, a respiratory medicine specialist, a medicine specialist and a cardiologist, formed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) authorities on the health condition of the BNP leader.The court also asked Fakhrul to surrender to the trial court before expiry of the bail. Six months after his arrest, the BNP leader who has been facing a number of cases relating to political violence, was released from jail on July 14.He went to Singapore on July 26 for treatment. Later on July 10, the BNP secretary general left Singapore for the USA for better medical treatment.
