Merharunnisa, Saidpur (Nilphamari) :
Country’s oldest Saidpur Railway Station is gradually losing its attraction to the passengers as it cannot fulfill the need of the passengers for comfortable journey.
The railway station is in grip of various problems that causing sufferings to the passengers. Renovation has been done with well-furnished shed, waiting room, toilets and platform.
The problem which the passengers travelling to and from Saidpur are facing is the low level brick laying ground in the second line of railway station. There is no platform in the second line of the station which is the crying need of the passengers. The passengers demanded platform in second line.
The inter-city train Rupsha and Shimanto always stand for a long time in the second line of the station.
The other trains from Saidpur to Dhaka and Rajsahi stand in the main platform which becomes easy for the passengers. The height of the brick laying second line ground from the door of the train is about 8 foot and the staircase is about 5 foot high. It becomes impossible for any patients, old and handicapped people, pregnant women and children for getting up and down. The passengers of Rupsha and Shimanto are facing this trouble for a long time.
Hundreds of passengers are travelling to Jaipurhat, Santahar, Ishwardi, Poradah, Chuadanga, Jessore and Khulna regularly by this train. Mainly the passenger from various places of this Rangpur Division travels from Saidpur to their different destinations adding a huge amount of income to the railway sector every year, in spite of that there is no renovation or construction of the second line.
According to the Station Master (on duty), the problem can be solved only after the renovation of the second line, otherwise it is not possible to get rid of this trouble. He also said, the starting point of Rupsha and Shimanto Express is Saidpur so to change the engine, cleaning and crossing of other train, these trains are not allowed to stand in the main platform.
The locals demanded renovation and construction of the second line soon to get rid of this long time problem. They also demand for the interference of the Railway and responsible authority for the solution of this trouble which they are facing.
It is also stated that Saidpur Railway Station was set up on 3000 acres of land in 1800 with a large number of red buildings.
After the partition, an Indian goods train and a passenger train used to ply from Cooch Bihar to Kolkata every day via Saidpur. The plying of the two trains stopped following the war between Pakistan and India in 1965.
