Planning Minister MA Mannan on Thursday sought the assistance of everyone for achieving Bangladesh’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He made the call while addressing a conference on the role of Micro financial Institutions (MFI) in achieving SDGs and financial inclusion. It was organised by Credit and Development Forum (CDF) at CIRDAP auditorium in the city.
“The government wants to work with everyone and march forward. Fairness and inclusion are necessary for this purpose. We expect support from all,” the minister said.
Mustafa K Mujeri, executive director of Institute for Inclusive Finance and Development, presented the keynote paper. He emphasised considering the roles of union parishads, upazila parishads and municipalities in the implementation of SDGs.
He said coordination between NGOs and other concerned organisations was necessary at local and national levels to achieve SDGs.
“The scarcity of data is a big barrier towards attaining the goals. There are many challenges. If we want to achieve the SDGs by 2030, we will have to continue regular activities and build up capacity simultaneously,” he said.
CDF Executive Director Md Abdul Awal said it would not be possible for the government alone to achieve SDGs. “We are trying to support in various ways at the root level,” he said.
Dr Sajjad Zahir, executive director of Economic Research Group, Montaz Uddin Ahmed, professor of economics department of Dhaka University, and Iqbal Ahmed, executive director of Padakhep Manabik Unnayan Kendra also spoke at the programme, among others.
