Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) cruises to finalise a strategic plan for increasing Aus and Aman cultivation, which will help grow 2.5 million tonnes of additional clean rice, sources said.
On the occasion, a workshop will be held today (Wednesday) at BRRI. Agriculture Scientists, Secretary of Agriculture Ministry, Director Generals of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) and Bangladesh Agriculture
Research Council (BARC) will participate and contribute to Aus and Aman production plan from their respective side, said Dr Jiban Krishna, Director General of BRRI.
Using a nation wide survey with simulation modeling technique, BRRI scientists have predicted if the strategic plan of seasonal rearrangement and cultivating fallow land with high yielding rice varieties instead of local landraces could be implemented, about 2.5 million tonnes of additional clean rice could be produced per year, he said.
BRRI has already done a research work on the matter along with the significant information of food security of the country from the local point of view and it is also an important agenda of the workshop, he said.
BRRI has so far developed 65 high yielding rice varieties, including four hybrid ones having three times higher yield potential than the traditional rice, BRRI DG said.
At present BRRI varieties cover 80 per cent of the total rice area that accounts for 90 per cent of the total rice production of the country.
