The Government has taken a plan to upgrade the National Zoo at Mirpur to world standard animal conservatory. By this time, international zoo specialist Bernard Harison has been given the charge of drafting the master plan to make the zoo attractive to the visitors. The work of designing the master plan will begin soon, while the modernisation work will follow it subject to the approval.
It is learnt that, a proposal titled ‘Bangladesh National and Rangpur Zoo Modernisation’ was sent to the Fishery and Livestock Ministry in 2012. On receipt of the proposal, the ministry ordered the zoo authority to study feasibility and prepare a draft of the master plan. The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) completed the work of feasibility study and design. Afterward international tenders were invited for modernization of the zoo. Several reputed international organizations submitted their tenders. After scrutiny, Bernard Harrison was given the charge. He has the experience
of modernising Singapore Safari Park and Singapore Zoo.
National Zoo Curator Dr. S.M. Nazrul Islam said, the work of preparing the master plan will begin soon. It will be completed within 14 months to be followed by the modernisation work.
He said, the National Zoo would be of world standard with the completion of all works. All kinds of facilities will be found in the zoo for the visitors and the animals (and birds).
The Curator says, there are all other animals except Chimpanzee. In absence of fund, it has not been possible to import animals every year. Rather, Harison and other experts have suggestions of reducing the number of animals below 1500.
Still Ziraf, Goyal and vulture have delivered kids despite limited facilities, vultures do not generally conceive in prison. Yet, they did it this time. Besides, deer, ass, python and horse are giving birth regularly. About it, Deputy Curator Dr. Md. Nurul Islam said, vultures do not conceive in prison in any zoo of the world.
