Plan to build Rly bridge on Jamuna: Minister

Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan on Tuesday said, the Railway Ministry has taken initiative to build railway bridge on the River Jamuna making railway connection with the northern districts with Dhaka vibrant.
The Bangabandhu Bridge has already become risky. That is why we are planning to build a separate railway bridge, Nurul Islam Sujan said.
The Minister said this when he visited the Syedpur Railway Industrial belt in Nilphamari district on Tuesday.
Adelur Rahman MP (Nilphamari-4), Secretary of the Railway Ministry Md Mofazzal Hossain, Additional Director General of the Ministry Md Shamsuzzaman, Director General (West Railway) Khondoker Shahidul Islam and Chief Equipment Controller Belal Hossain Khondoker, Deputy Commissioner of Nilphamari District Najia Shirin, President of Nilphamari District Awami League Dewan Kamal Ahmed and Syedpur Upazila Chairman Moksedul Momenun accompanied the Minister, among others.
“Japan has expressed its keen interest to invest in the country’s railway sector.
We have also taken the opportunity. As a result, the work of building railway bridge will begin soon,” he said.
The Minister informed that the Bangladesh government would seek more investment from the neighbouring India for the development of the railway in the Syedpur area.
“We will be tremendously benefitted if we can establish more railway industrial belts. We could build new coaches to facilitate the journey by the railway. It will also help us reducing import of the coaches from abroad,” the Railway Minister said.
Asking about the manpower crisis in the railway sector, the Minister said, “I know that there is acute manpower crisis. About 10,000 employees were sacked through golden handshake beginning from 1991. Many employees also went on retirement.”
“We shall give appointment to skilled hands step by step to reduce the crisis,” he said.
The Minister said, many railway stations had remained closed for several reasons. We will take measurers to resume the stations soon.
