BSS, Dhaka :
The government has embarked on a plan to amend the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act, 2009 aimed at making the law time-befitting, an official said here on Friday. The act is going to be amended against the backdrop of a series of public reactions and problems the government faced while enforcing the act.
“We got huge public reactions to the act and face some problems while working with the law…we will amend the act to make it time-befitting,” Md Abul Hossain Mia, Director General of Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), told BSS.
Abul Hossain said the decision of amendment to the act came at a meeting with the Commerce Minister presiding on February 16. He said the directorate will finalize a draft of the amendment in three months and then it would be sent to the ministry for further procedure.
After that, all stakeholders will have a thread-bare discussion on the amendment to the act, said the additional secretary.
Experts on different occasions pointed out that the rights of people to various services, including the financial ones, have not been reflected properly in the Consumer Rights Protection Act.
They favoured immediate amendment to the act to enable people to take legal measures against the producers of sub- standard commodities and adulterated food.
“A lot has been put in the law regarding the rights of consumers for using goods. But the law has not focused in details on the rights of consumers in getting various services, including banking services,” said Professor Mustafizur Rahman, Executive Director of Centre for Policy Dialogue.
