Business Desk :
The government plans to form a commission to check irregularities in the country’s banking sector which already faced a number of massive loan scams, said Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
He said such body is expected to come into existence by the end of the incumbent government’s term.
The present Awami League government will finish its second consecutive term in office at the end of 2018.
Muhith said the new government will benefit from the commission in preventing banking sector anomalies.
“After two years, there will be new government which could reap benefits from the commission,” said finance minister at the annual meeting of Sonali Bank on Sunday.
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan and Sonali Bank Chairman Md Ashraful Makbul, among others, were also present.
“Initially, I opposed the idea of forming a banking commission. But now we feel that it is necessary for the betterment of our financial sector,” Muhith said.
“But we have to wait until the banking sector is ready to implement the plan of a banking commission.”
Muhith hoped Sonali Bank would be able to become the most successful bank in Bangladesh.
“Sonali Bank’s different indicators are poor. The capital shortfall of the Sonali Bank is larger than any other banks in the country.”
Finance minister said the government will meet some of the capital shortfall of the Sonali Bank and the bank’s management will take special measures to reduce the amount of classified loans.
“I hope Sonali Bank will turn around in two years. The management will have to take this challenge. It’s nothing impossible,” he said.
“A big capital of Sonali Bank is its acceptability to clients as the largest state-owned bank.”
