PKB disburses Tk 455.03 cr loan to overseas workers

The state-run Probashi Kallyan Bank (PKB) disbursed Taka 455.03 crore as loans to 39,290 people who were going to abroad for works and returned home.
The information came up in the sixth meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment held at Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban on Tuesday with its chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud in the chair.
It is said that the bank disbursed Taka 455.03 crore as loan while recovered Taka 331.14 crore against this loan as of October 31 this year, an official release said.
With a view to making the concerned bank more modern and time befitting, the watchdog committee suggested building manpower of the PKB, it added.
They also advised the concerned authorities to strengthen the monitoring activities to reduce harassment of the returned employee from abroad.
In the meeting, it is recommended to take pragmatic measures to prevent torture of women workers who are working abroad by maintaining contact with the government or heads of state.
Committee members Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmed, Mouazzam Hossain Ratan, Mrinal Kanti Das, Ayesha Ferdaus,Pankaj Nath and Md Iqbal Hossain attended the meeting, among others.
Senior officials of concerned ministry and Parliament Secretariat were also present at the meeting.
