Piranha, a tropical American river fish which eats live animals, is being sold ceaselessly at different markets of 8 upazilas in Rangpur district.
According to sources in 2008 the government imposed a ban on cultivation of the fish in ponds and water bodies and sale of it in the markets.
But a section of dishonest people are cultivating the fish in their water bodies and also marketing it in collusion with some unscrupulous traders defying the ban on it.
The market places where the sale of the fish is rampant are Mulatol bazar, Mahigonj bazar, Darsona, Modern More, Dhaperhat, Bhurarghat, Lalbag, Damdoma unader Rangpur sadar upazila, Haragach, Dhumarkhuti at Kaunia upazila, Moslem bazar, Talimgonj at Mithapukur upazila and also the fish markets of other upazilas of the district.
The fish is being sold between Tk110 to Tk130 per Kg in the local markets. Sometimes a section of dishonest traders cheat the consumers by selling Piranha to them as sea fish.
