Physician, staff shortage hit treatment at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital

Shortage of physicians including specialists and staff and relevant materials has been hampering the proper treatment in 100 -bed Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for few years.
Out of sanctioned 41 positions of the physicians including junior and senior consultants, 22 are serving here, while the position of remaining 19 is vacant. Further, the positions of 10 administrative staffs are lying vacant here.
According to hospital sources, positions of senior consultant pediatric, eye and surgery, junior consultants of cardiology, anesthesia, medicine, pathology, indoor medical officer (IMOs) and emergency medical officers (EMOs) have been lying. Of them, a number of positions are created newly.
Positions of two assistant nurses, administrative officer, pharmacist, office assistant cum data entry operator, ward master and ticket clerks are also lying vacant.
Sometimes it has been leading untoward incidents in the hospital, said the patients, their attendants and the service providers, said the authority.
Superintendent of Jhenaiah Sadar hospital Dr. Ayub Ali when contacted said, the hospital was declared as 250 beds by the Prime Minister Seikh Hasina during her past reign visit about three years back. The hospital has been running as 100 bed ones for a long time where the facilities are not available here.
The Superintendent said, around 50 children are treated in the hospital as against its bed for eight only. Further, around 200 patients are treated in the indoor everyday. Another 800 to 1,000 patients have been treated from the outdoor (OPD) everyday.
But the working physicians and staff can not ensure proper services to all the patients. More over, 3 to 4 physicians either avail leave or remain out side the station for some unavoidable reasons.
Acute shortage of X-ray films have increased the sufferings of the patients, especially the poor patients rush everyday at the hospital.
The supply of X-ray films was stopped since last three months. As a result, the patients have to pay money to ensure the same with money from private clinics or hospitals.
Purchasing of the X-ray film is under process. Crisis in only district level government hospital was informed to the authority concern to ease the sufferings of the patients, the superintendent informed.
