Bagerhat Correspondent :
3 women including 2 pregnant patients who went to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital on Sunday for taking treatment were allegedly physically assaulted by Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Senior consultant of Gynecology Department of the hospital instead of giving treatment.
As a result, a strong agitation was created among the other patients of the hospital and their relatives. In the face of the agitation the alleged physician left the hospital. Being informed of the matter Dr. Arun Chandra Mandol, Superintendent of the hospital and Civil Surgeon of Bagerhat rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by giving the assurance the agitated patients and their relatives that step would be taken against the physician for his misconduct and misbehavior with the women patients.
The women patients who were physically assaulted by the physician are Fatema Begun (28), wife of one Zahidul Babul of village Panchamala under Morrelganj Upazila in Bagerhat district and Rezina Begum (20), wife of one Alam Shaikh of village Gazirhat under the same Upazila and her mother Nasima Begum (45).
Nasima Begum complained to the newsmen, my daughter is in advanced stage. So, she was taken to the hospital on yesterday in the morning and the doctor on duty admitted her to the hospital. At about 10 am Dr. Abul Kalam Azad came to the word to visit the patients. Just at that time her daughter was in travail and embraced her with both arms. The physician asked me to leave the ward at once. But I lost a few seconds to leave the ward after consoling my daughter. At this Dr. Abul Kalam Azad became furious and slapped me twice forcibly on my head. As a result, I fell on the floor. Not only that but also the doctor slapped my daughter who was suffering from labour-pain forcibly twice on her head.
Another pregnant patient admitted to the hospital was Fatema Begum. She told the newsmen, after assaulting Rezina Begum and her mother the doctor came to my bed, cried out loudly and said, you were asked to leave the hospital yesterday. Why are you still living here? And then and then the doctor also slapped me forcibly twice on my head.

When contacted Dr. Arun Chandra Mandol, Superintendent of the hospital told the newsmen that at the time of the incident he had been in his office room in the hospital. Physically assaulting of a patient by a physician was a gross misconduct. He added that primarily the truth of the allegation was proved. The Physician had committed an offence by physically assaulting the patients and he (Dr. Arun Chandra Mandol) was very sorry for that. In this connection a show cause notice was issued against the alleged physician Dr. Abul Kalam Azad.
