Some 11,042 people with special needs get allowance in the district as part of the government’s countrywide safety net programme.
Local office of Department of Social Service (DSS) disbursed around Taka 6.63 crore among them in 2015-16 fiscal.
Rubina Yeasmin, Deputy Director of DSS, told BSS the beneficiaries have been getting their respective allowance timely through their own bank accounts. “We have distributed the allowance among the physically challenged people at the rate of Taka 500 per month in the district”
In four phases, each beneficiary got Taka 6,000 as one-year allowance from July to June.
She said allowance distribution programme for people with disability is a successful initiative of the present government and the beneficiaries got their respective allowances timely through their own bank accounts.
The present government, she said, has taken many steps including disable people allowance for the welfare of vulnerable people to help them passing their days without difficulty. “Considering their vulnerable condition, the government has increased their allowance and also number of beneficiaries from the current fiscal,” she said.
In the district, a total of 1,519 physically challenged students have also received Taka 1.07 crore as education allowance.
“The beneficiaries have been leading better life and many of them changing fortune through various income generation activities, small enterprises and businesses utilising the government allowances,” the official added.
Rubina Yeasmin said the challenged people are being given identification cards for the first time so that they can receive allowances directly from the government.
There are 34,850 data entries people with disabilities in the district. All of their identity cards were printed. A total of 19,767 people have, so far, received their laminated cards here.
Allowance distribution programme was continuing for the same number of beneficiaries in different categories during the current fiscal in the district.
