Phulbari UZ polls held peacefully

Phulbari Upazila Parishad election of Kurigram was held peacefully from 8am to 4pm yesterday.
Two candidates were contesting . One AL candidate with symbol of Boat another AL rebel candidate with symbol of Motor Cycle.
The voters’ presence was not sufficient from the morning to noon. In the afternoon the voters presence were increasing. The election was supposed to hold on March 10. Elections of other eight upazila parishads under the district were held on last 10 March this year. District Election Officer and Returning Officer for Phulbari Upazila Parishad Election, received a letter from the Secretariat of Election Commission on March 27.
The commission advised the RO to hold the stayed upazila parishad election on March 31.
According to order of the election commission the election was held on 31 March of Phulbari upazila parishad. There were 1lakh 26thousand 497 voters in six unions under the upazila including sadar UP. Two candidates AL Md. Ataur Rahman (Boat symbol) and independent candidate (AL rebel) Md. Rabbani Sarker (Motor cycle symbol) were contesting between them for the post of Upazila Parishad Chairman, said Haolader Md. Kamrul Hasan,Assistant Returning Officer and Phulbari Upazila Election Officer.

T he High Court Division stayed its election on March 6 while a resident Md. Sharif Uddin of Kamalpur village of Dashiarchhara (Former Indian enclave) under Phulbari upazila filed a writ petition challenging the upazila election schedule as the Dashiarchhara people have been demanding a separate union parishad to Dashiarchhara after including it with Bangladesh on August 1, 2015.
