The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court has ordered the Prothom Alo and the Jugantor-two local Bengali dailies-to give original pictures of Bangladesh origin Canadian citizens Hasnat Karim and Tahmid Hasib Khan to the investigators.
Both the dailies recently ran the photos of Hasnat Karim and Tahmid Hasib Khan which were snapped by unknown cameraperson using long-range photographic equipments just hardly two to three hours before the army commandos started operation on July 2 morning. Later, the photos were also run by different dailies, web portals and televisions. Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury, Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, gave the order on Thursday after the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crimes Unit [CTTCU] moved the court seeking the photos to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
“I hope the editors would comply with the court order. If we get the pictures, we will send those to our forensic lab to ascertain their authenticity,” Monirul Islam, Chief of CTTCU on Friday said.
“But if they are proved false, then publishing them will be considered a criminal offence. In this regard, the court will give necessary order on the matter. However, if they are genuine, we will seek experts’ help including body language specialists,” Monirul Islam, also Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said.
The pictures ran by Prothom Alo and Jugantor showed former North South University teacher Hasnat having a close-conversation with terrorist Rohan Imtiaz on the roof of Holey Artisan Bakery and Tahmid was standing there holding a pistol in his right hand.
A total of 22 people, including 17 foreigners and two policemen, were killed in the deadly terror attack, in the country’s history.
According to the investigators, an absconding Tamim Chowhury is the masterminded the attack while sacked army major Ziaul Haque coordinated the operation.
