Photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol has been charged with circulating degrading, objectionable, fake and defamatory content on ministers, Awami League (AL) leaders and activists through his social media account.
Detective Branch (DB) of police Sub-inspector (SI) Md Russell Mollah, investigator of the case, said an examination of Kajol’s phone had found evidence that he had made defamatory
comments about Awami league leaders and threatened to defame female Awami League leaders with indecent photos on social media platform Facebook.
Si Russell filed the charge sheet with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on February 4. Dhaka Tribune obtained a copy of the charge sheet on Thursday.

According to the charge sheet, Kajol allegedly tried to extort money from female Awami League activists and leaders by threatening to defame them with doctored and indecent photos.
Usmin Ara Bally, member of Bangladesh Jubo Mohila League Central Committee, filed the case with Hazaribagh police station under the Digital Security Act in March.
Kajol sent six photos, including an indecent one, to Bally’s Facebook messenger on March 3, the charge sheet said.
Kajol also posted derogatory comments about Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Bangladesh Jubo Mohila League President Nazma Akter, Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu, Bangladesh Jubo Mohila League General Secretary Apu Ukil, and more than a hundred other female activists on Facebook under the username “Kajol Fakir the Believer,” as per the charge sheet.
The journalist went missing on March 10, a day after Awami League Magura 1 MP Saifuzzaman Shikhor filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station in Dhaka.

Three separate cases under the Digital Security Act were filed against Kajol with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Kamrangirchar, and Hazaribagh police stations in March.
Kajol, who had previously worked as a photojournalist at national dailies such as the “Dainik Samakal” and “Banik Barta,” is the editor of the fortnightly magazine “Pokkhokal.”
After his 53-day disappearance, Kajol was detained by the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at the Benapole border in Jessore on May 3.
