Petition seeking directive on import, use of formalin filed

A supplementary petition was filed with the High Court (HC) yesterday seeking its directive to formulate a policy on import and use of formalin in food and fruits.
The HC directive was also sought upon the Commerce Secretary to form a separate licensing authority for using formalin and chemicals related to food safety.
Md. Farid Ahmed, Assistant Director of Legal Action Bangladesh Foundation, filed the petition.
The petitioner also sought another HC directive on the Ministry of Home Affairs to submit a report on what steps it took about controlling the usage of formalin.
Commerce Secretary, Home Affairs Secretary, Food Secretary, Health Secretary, Industries Secretary, Law Secretary, BSTI Managing Director and Director, Inspector General of Police, RAB Director General and DMP Police Commissioner were made respondents in the petition.
Earlier, Farid Ahmed filed a writ petition with the HC seeking its order in implementing the Safety Food Act 2013, said Advocate Mohidul Kabir, lawyer of the petitioner.
