The persons, including two bankers, a civil surgeon, an upazila engineer, a deputy assistant of Public Health Department and a contractor were arrested from Dhaka, Chittagong and Gaibandha district. ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed it.
An ACC team led by its Director Mir Zainal Abedin Shibly arrested Executive Officers of Sonali Bank Md Mosharraf Hossain and Md Zakir Hossain and Barisal Civil Surgeon Aftab Uddin from the city’s Segunbagicha area around 12 noon.
On July 2, 2015, the national anti-graft body filed a case against them with Motijheel Police Station for allegedly swindling out over Tk 4.14 crore from Sonali Bank’s local office during 2008-2010. Zakir Hossain was also made accused in another case filed on September 30, 2015 for allegedly plundering over Tk six crore from the bank.
ACC Assistant Director Amirul Islam detained former civil surgeon of Barisal Altaf Uddin Ahmed from Segunbagicha area in a Tk 92-lakh graft case earlier filed by the anti-graft body.
Another team of the Commission’s Chittagong Divisional Office led by its Director Abdul Aziz Bhuiyan, arrested LGED’s former Engineer of Baghaichari Upazila Ziaul Haque Dulal from Agrabad area of the port city around 1 pm.
On March 8, 2016, the ACC filed a case against Dulal (now engineer of Patiya upazila) for allegedly misappropriating public money for about Tk six lakh in implementing a local government project.
Meanwhile, an ACC team with the help of police detained Abdul Khalek, Proprietor of M/s Abdul Khalek, and ASM Arif Billah, Deputy Assistant Engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering, from Gaibandha Sadar.
M/s Abdul Khalek got a workorder last year to construct a toilet at Eghadumura Government Primary School in Gaibandha Sadar and it started the construction work in September 2015 involving Tk 8.5 lakh. The construction firm was supposed to use iron rods in building toilet, but it used bamboo sticks.
The scandalous incident was exposed on April 8 when villagers from Meghdumur village found construction workers using bamboo sticks and thin iron pipes of abandoned benches of the school after breaking a window and door. Later, they informed the local UP Chairman and the authorities concerned about it.
A seven-member committee was then formed to investigate the incident.
Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told The New Nation on Wednesday that the ACC launched an inquiry into the allegation on Tuesday and it arrested two people involved in the construction work on Wednesday as the Commission suspected that they might go into hiding.
