Academics and researchers at a discussion said mainstream people’s support is vital for protection of rights of the ethnic minority people.
The observation came at the inaugural session of a two-day long 4th National Seminar styled “Change, Continuity, and the Marginals in Bangladesh” at conference hall of Ashrai Research and Training Centre (ARTC) in Rajshahi on Friday.Department of Anthropology at Rajshahi University (RU) and Institute of Social Research and Applied Anthropology ((ISRAA) jointly organized the seminar in association with ARTC.
More than 150 teachers and students from department of anthropology in Dhaka University (DU), Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Comilla University and the host RU joined the seminar.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of RU Professor Ananda Kumar Shaha addressed the session as the chief guest while ISRAA Founder and former VC of DU Professor Anwarullah Chowdhury addressed as the seminar speaker.
With Seminar Convener Professor Ahsan Ali in the chair, Professor Mizanuddin from RU, Professor Nesbah Kamal and Professor Zahidul Islam from DU and Professor Imam Ali from Chittagong University also spoke.
Professor Shaha said the mainstream people should protect the rights of the minority groups and that there should be a harmony between the mainstream people and the minority ethnic groups.
He urged the government to come up with immediate plans to prevent the encroachment on the lands of the minority people.
Professor Chowdhury said the government should make special efforts to look after all those people who are backward and under poverty line in a bid to take them forward for creating a level-playing field for all citizens and ensure balanced development.
