Participation of mass people is vital to make the local government institutions including Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) effective coupled with ensuring civic services to all including the poor and marginalised communities and children, speakers at a participatory discussion here said yesterday.
They viewed there should be adequate measures for ensuring transparency and accountability in the service providing activities to attain the hopes and aspirations of the citizens.
The observations came while unveiling a survey report of Citizens Report Card on the RCC services held in its conference hall.
Committee for the Conscious Citizens (CCC), a sister organization of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), conducted the survey and organized the event for unveiling the report.
Mayor-in-Charge of RCC Nizam-Ul Azim was the respondent of the programme while ward councilors Sohrab Hossain Sheikh and Muslima Begum Belly, Chief Executive Officer Azahar Ali and Secretary Syeda Zebin Nissa supplemented him.
In the open discussion session, the participants including some RCC ward councilors underscored the need for more coordination among other service providing agencies especially RDA, Police, BRTA and RWASA for quality services.
With CCC President Prof Abdus Salam in the chair, CCC members Advocate Abdus Samad, Kolpona Roy and Sajnaz Begum, development activists Foyzullah Chowdhury and Saiduzzaman Sipon spoke on the occasion. CCC Vice-president Akbarul Hassan Millat moderated the discussion.
During his report presentation, Monirul Islam Zahid, Deputy Programme Manager (Research and Policy) of TIB, put forward a set of recommendations on how to fulfill the cherished expectations of the citizens and improving their living and livelihood condition.
He mentioned that ensuring urban public and environmental health is very vital for substantial and sustainable livelihood improvement of the civic lives through improving health status of the mass people especially poor.
“We are working relentlessly for building the city in a planned and environmentally sound way so that it can cope with environmental degradation in the wake of rushing huge people to the city every year,” said Mayor Nizam-Ul Azim.
Promoting environmental health services like solid waste, medical waste, food and water safety and municipal financial reformation through enabling public private partnership, citizens participation, gender responsive and pro-poor targeting is being given priority.
Emphasis is being given to promoting and strengthening citizen’s participation in the environmental health and beautification process, he added.
Chief Executive Officer Azahar Ali told the meeting that the corporation is working for environmental development in the city. It’s committed to making the city habitable through undertaking need-based projects to earn the trusts of the city dwellers.
