“People’s participation in budget formulation can enhance democracy”

People’s participations in formulating local budgets can enhance democracy at the grassroots level, speakers at separate open union budget announcing ceremonies said on Saturday.
They were speaking at the Taka 1.66 crore budget announcement ceremony of Mominpur union under Sadar upazila and Taka 1.99 crore union budget of Betgari union under Gangachara upazila on the respective union parishad premises in the district.
Newly elected Sadar upazila parishad chairman Nasima Zaman Bobby attended and addressed the budget announcing ceremony of Mominpur union parishad as the chief guest with acting union parishad chairman Monirul Islam Bhuttu in the chair.
Local Awami league leader Obaidul Islam Mintu, union parishad members and elite Sirajul Islam, Raju Mian, Aminur Rahman, Sabuz Mian, Dulal Mian, Abdul Monnaf, Ziaur Rahman, Ashrafuzzaman, Habiba Khatun and Dulali Begum were present.
After the open budget discussions, union parishad Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun announced the Taka 1.66 crore annual development budgets for the 2014-2014 fiscal, in the ceremony attained by over 2,000 people from all cross sections in the society.
In Betgari union parishad, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Gangachara Tauhidul Islam attended the open budget announcing ceremony arranged there as the chief guest with union parishad chairman Nirmolendu Goswami in the chair.
Regional Coordinator of The Hunger Project Rajesh Dey Raju, social worker Maruf Hossain and Akhteruzzaman, union member Alamgir Hossain, union parishad secretary Illias Ahmed and journalist Mizanur Rahman addressed the occasion.
