Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge: People unhappy over toll collection for 27 years

 People of this region are unhappy over the long-standing toll collections from Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge for 27 years.
 Zilla civil society activists warned that if the toll collection was not stopped, they will launch movement against the toll collections . However, Road Transport and Bridge Minister Obaidul Quader said, the matter will be brought to the attention to the Prime Minister and Finance Minister .
 Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge was built on Brahmaputra River in Patgudam area of Mymensingh in 1991 and since then the toll has been collected .
 In the long 27 years, toll collection has not been stopped and following the situation , the transport operators and owners of this region have become angry . Currently, the toll is being collected at the rate of Tk 10 to Tk 250 from each vehicle.
Leaders of the district civil movement say that if the toll of the Patgudam Bridge is not stopped, the movement will be started . Mymensingh General Secretary District Civil Activist Nurul Amin Kalam said, the owners of the transport and the workers who are there like a scam is coming up with a long punch . So, we will request to stop toll collection immediately.”
There is no directive for not stopping toll , said Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Mohammad Masud Khan. He said, ‘The recovery of toll of this bridge is a matter of decision-making of the government. We do not have any instructions on closing it.
Roads and Highways Department said this bridge was constructed at a cost of Tk 97 crore . Every day 5 thousand vehicles crossed this bridge. In the last three years, the toll lease of this bridge has stood at about Tk 28 cr.
