Mob lynching on rise: People taking law in their own hands?

Incidents of lynching have marked rise in last six months according to the statistics of Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK).
It said at least 69 people were lynched during January-June this year, where as the total number was 96 last year.
So far, 29 people, including Samiul Alam Razon in Sylhet, were killed by mob in the last two months while the figure of lynching was 96 in the last year.
In the first three months (January to March), the number was 31, according to the ASK data, which was compiled on the basis of media reports covering these brutal accidents.
Rights activists and criminologists have expressed their grave concern over the growing trend of such worst form of crimes.
They also feared that the number of such brutal incidents would cross the 2014’s figure in the first eight months of the year if the trend continues.
In Pabna, three pesons were killed by mob beating in broad-daylight on suspicion of kidnappers in Chaturhat crossing in Sathia upazila on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased could not be identified immediately, police said.
Local people chased and caught the three as they were allegedly trying to abduct a boy in the area using a microbus, said Md Alamgir Kabir, Superintendent of Police.
Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Pabna Medical College Hospital.
In capital, a teenage boy was beaten to death allegedly by a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist in Hazaribagh after accusing him on August 16. In Sylhet, a thirteen-year-old boy was killed by some people on charge of theft at Kumargaon Bus Stand on July 12. The deceased was identified Sheikh Md Samiul Alam alias Razon.
In Satkhira, two alleged land grabbers were killed in on attack by the landless people at Chingrakhali in Kaliganj of Satkhira on Monday morning when a group of terrorists tried to grab their homes on the khas lands, said Satkhira Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kaliganj circle) Mir Maniruzzman.
In Chapainawabganj, four alleged robbers were killed in mass beating near Mokarrampur Bridge under Gomastapur upazila while trying to snatch a motorcycle, said Firoz Ahmed, Officer in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station.
In Narsingdi, two robbers suspects were killed and another was injured in a mass beating at Gondardia under Monohardi upazila at about 10pm on Wednesday, said Monohardi Police Station OC SM Alamgir Hossain.
Meanwhile, villagers lynched seven suspected robbers while injured another one at Takshal in Sadar upazila of Narsingdi on January 26. Earlier, five robber suspects have been killed in mob beating at Dastardi village under Sadar upazila.
In Gazipur, an youth died in mass beating beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Chandna Chowrasta in Gazipur city on Wednesday.
Earlier on May 15, a robber was lynched by angry mob at Borun village under Kapasia upazila.
In Noakhali, three robbers have been killed and four others injured in a mob beating incident at Nobogram under Kabirhat upazila in July, said Police Super Md Ilias Sharif.
In Barisal, three ‘robbers’ were lynched by mob in Hijla Upazila on July 13.
In Meherpur, local people hacked to death three persons in Rajapur village in Meherpur Sadar Upazila on April 9.
In Faridpur, two suspected robbers were killed in a mob attack at Hatkholar Char in Boalmari upazila of Faridpur on July 6. Besides, three suspected robbers were killed at Badarpur area On June 25.
In Kustia, two youth were beaten to death by mob suspecting them to be robbers while they were trying to cut a tree in Mirpur upazila. July 15.
In Chittagong, angry mob have lynched a youth on charge of a stealing a cow at Bariyakhali village of Mirsarai upazila, said SI Safiqul Islam.
In Mymensingh, three dacoits were killed by angry mobs when they were committing the crime at Trishal upazila in February.
Talking to The New Nation, ASK Director of Investigations Nur Khan said that the absence of rule of law, coupled with degradation of social and moral values, people were getting more ferocious and taking law in their own hands.
Professor Monirul Islam Khan, Chairman of Sociology Department at Dhaka University, said that the form of violence the country was witnessing in the recent months had been more horrifying and brutal than that in the past. He said many that people face culture of impunity at various stages of their daily life.
