Khagrachari Correspondent :
People of the district are suffering much for want of a bridge over the Mainee River at Dighinala upazila here for long.
At least 17 people including eight children drowned in the last three years while crossing the river that is located between Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari district and Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district.
Local public representatives are aware about the causalities and had expressed condolence to the victims’ families but didn’t take initiative to construct a bridge on the river to ease the sufferings of the people, locals alleged.
KM Ismail Hossain of Merung village under Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari district said, “The Mainee River is situated on the eastern side of Merung Bazar.
There are roads on both sides of the river but those have remained disconnected for want of a bridge. Many people had died in the past while crossing the river.”
He further said, “We have submitted applications to the concerned officers of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and Khagrachhari Hill District Council (KHDC) to construct a bridge but there was no fruitful result.”
“Now we need around two hours to go Baghaichhari upazila from Dighinala upazila by road. But if the bridge is constructed, it will take only 40 minutes to go there,” he added.
Riaz Uddin of Hazachhara village under Dighinala upazila said, “An elderly man Ledu Mia, 60, had died after he fell in the Mainee River while crossing it by a boat few months ago. We recovered his body from Boroitala under Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati district after 12 days of the incident.”
