Dhaka-Ctg Highway blockaded demanding return of abducted NCC Panel Mayor, lawyer and others: Threat to continue court boycott

The transport movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Naryanganj remained suspended for two hours on Monday, as the people and the lawyers separately held programmes protesting abduction of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior advocate of Narayanganj Chandan Kumar Sarker.
The people made the barricade at Mouchak and Sanarpar area of Siddhirganj in the morning. At the time, they burnt tires on the on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway. Police charged baton on the protesters to disperse them while the protestors also threw stones at the police, which created a scuffle between the police and the people, leaving 20 persons injured.
At the time, all modes of transport movement remained suspended, creating heavy traffic congestion. Buses, trucks and other transports resumed after 1.00 PM. However, none was arrested over the incident.
Nazrul Islam along with his four associates was abducted from Fatulla area of the city on Sunday. Chandan Sarker and his driver remained missing also from Sunday noon after they went out of the court. They were leaving the court for Dhaka after Nazrul got bail in a case.
Additional DIG of Dhaka range Golam Faruk visited the spot from where Nazrul Islam was abducted. He was abducted near Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium of Fatulla.
Meanwhile, the lawyers of Narayanganj District Bar Association blockaded the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road also in the morning, creating heavy traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway. They also submitted a memorandum to SP of Narayanganj demanding the rescue of Chandann Sarker by next 24 hours.
The lawyers warned that they would give continuous court boycott programme if their fellow was not returned within the timeframe.
Boycotting the court activities, hundreds of lawyers started demonstration on the court premises and brought out a procession. At one stage, they blockaded the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road adjacent to the court.
After two hours, they freed the link road and marched towards the office of Narayanganj SP Syed Nurul Islam to submit a memorandum.
BNP district unit president Taimur Alam Khandakar, Led by president of the Narayanganj District Lawyers’ Association Advocate Shakawat Hossain and general secretary Advocate Zakir Hossain led the procession.
