Barrister Mainul Hosein has observed that the nation must be saved from the dangers of sick politics and its leaders. This is no politics to use the young as dangerous criminals, because the politicians are to be the embodiment of character and integrity for the whole nation to follow. He explained that long years of criminalized politics has created decay of moral values and made people’s life unsafe all over the country. Former adviser to the last caretaker government Barrister Mainul Hosein said this at a function, organized by Bangladesh Human Rights Monitoring Council (BMRMC) on “Values Degradation in Family and Social Life” at a city hotel on Saturday.Barrister Hosein continued: It is for the benefit of criminalized politics that the government held voter less election without caring that a government of voter less election is not a people’s government. The much needed political change is not possible by the leaders of criminalized politics. The government will fall for its inability to govern due to its own excessive criminalisation of every aspect of social life, he said. He concluded that as political solution is not available, there has to be a social uprising to create opportunities for new and honest leadership. Former secretary ambassador Mofazzal Karim, former Chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Maj Gen (Retd) ZA Khan, columnist Kazi Siraz, Group Captain (Retd) Fazlul Haque, Masud George, Group Captain (Retd) Alfaz, Advocate AHM Mainuddin Ahmed Jahangir and Barrister Sarwar among others, who spoke at the function with chairman of BHRMC Md Nurul Huda Chowdhury in the chair. Nurul Huda Chowdhury presented the keynote paper while secretary general of the organisation Talukder Moniruzzaman Monir gave the address of welcome. In his short paper Mr. Chowdhury said family and social values have to be upheld though the country’s politics is dominated by criminalized persons. Expressing grave concern over degradation of values speakers at the function stressed the need for a social movement against corrupt politics and corrupt leadership. Bitterly criticizing state patronization of corruption and moral degradation they said person like Mainul Hosein should come forward to help establish clean politics in the country.Mofazzal Karim said that the country is now passing through a critical juncture of time following deterioration of values at all levels. Bangladesh never witnessed such a situation, he said adding corrupt politics and absence of rule of law can be held responsible for the situation. He said that a social movement has to be initiated to save the country.  People, he said have no security of life. The corrupt persons are enjoying blessings from highest level, he said adding 95 per cent of people are honest. A qualitative change in politics has to take place, he said. Kazi Siraz said that society has become devoid of morality and ethics. Muscle power and mafia-style gangsters are commonplace in politics. Corruption could be reduced, if good governance could be ensured, he said. During recent years, he said, corruption has become all pervasive and marked significant increase.ZA Khan expressing concern over degradation from the highest level to the lowest, said even the civil society has become corrupt. “We have to come out of it.”
