Staff Reporter :Despite a countrywide 24-hour hartal of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the rejection of the review plea of its Chief (Ameer) Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami by the Supreme Court, life in the city and country was peaceful.The hartal which was supposed to begin at 6:00am Sunday failed to draw people’s support.The plying of vehicles, including passenger buses, privately owned cars and CNG-run auto-rickshaws, was almost normal in the city and elsewhere in the country. No picketing was reported in the capital and other parts of the country till filing of this report at 10:00pm.About 10,000 additional police personnel remained deployed in the capital from 6:00am to maintain law and order during the hartal.Jamaat, however, said Police arrested at least 50 leaders and activists of the party across the country.Jamaat Acting Ameer Makbul Ahmad and Acting Secretary General Dr Shafiqur Rahman in a joint statement announced the shut down soon after the Supreme Court verdict on Thursday. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected death-row war crimes convict Nizami’s review petition against its previous verdict that awarded death penalty on charge of his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
