The people coming to meet their relatives at the Sylhet district jail on special days face hazards. According to prisoners’ relatives, they are compelled to pay money in every step before they can meet their relatives in jail and are also bound to purchase something from the shop run by the jail authority by paying almost double of the price. As a result, dissatisfaction has been prevailing among the visiting relatives of the prisoners.
Taking the chance provided by the jail authority, the prisoners’ relatives bring favourite menu for their relatives in jail on the special days.
Sentry near the jail gate collects money for keeping cell phones of the visitors and jail police also prepare list of the visitors taking money. A long queue of prisoners’ relatives is found in front of the shop on the jail premises run by the jail authority. Interestingly, each visitor is compelled to buy one can of soft drink at exorbitant price as the jail authority would not allow any visitor to take any favourite menu inside the jail without the soft drink.
Husna Ara of Patan Para area in the town, coming to meet her husband in the jail, said that she had given money to the sentry at the main gate for keeping her cell phone and to the jail police for reaching the favourite menu to her husband.
Amina Khatun of Kamalbazar village in Dakshin Surma upazila, coming to meet their relatives in the jail, narrated the same picture.
Hossain, sentry of the main gate said that he takes money from the visitors for keeping cell phones, according to the order of the authority.
Jail Super of Sylhet said that they do not take money by creating pressure. Cops on duty inside the shop said that they only advise the relatives of the prisoners to take one bottle of soft drink as they take rich dishes on the special days.
jailor of Sylhet admitted that there might be some dishonest jail cops. He gave assurance of taking action against the delinquents.
