Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain has unveiled a new political alliance ‘Jatiya Oikya Front’ with BNP and two other parties, ahead of the 11th national election to press home seven demands and meet 11 goals.
After three days of consecutive meeting, finally on Saturday the new alliance was formally launched at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in the city yesterday evening.
Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, however, was not present at the press briefing.
The alliance leaders have decided to run the movement against the autocratic government to restore democracy and democratic values in the country.
Four political parties have stood under this alliance are Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Dr. Kamal Hossain led Gono Forum, ASM Abdur Rab led Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and Mahmudur Rahman Manna led Nagorik Oikya.
The new alliance raised seven point demands, including release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and meeting 11goals.
Speaking at the press conference Dr. Kamal Hossain said, “We are forging the unity in the interest of 16 crore people of the country, not to protect the interest of any particular party.”
“We have no adequate time to waste, we will have to take the Jatiya Oikya Front at district level across the country immediately,” Dr Kamal said.
He hoped that AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury-led Bikalpadhara Bangladesh would also join the new alliance later.
Addressing in the press briefing BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, ” We have united together to make a new dream where BNP will contribute to bring back the multi-party democracy in the country which is now victimized by this fascist government.”
He said, “We will not return without establishing the equal rights of all people of the country.”
President of JSD, ASM Rab said that the government has arranged training session for the Ansars/VDP with a view to training them for rigging in the upcoming national election.
“With this unity we have to move across the country
and need to talk with all classes of people for the betterment of fair polls. We want instant release of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia,” Rab said.
On behalf of the new coalition, Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna made the announcement of the seven-point demand of Oikya Front at the press conference.
“We have been endeavouring our efforts to form such national unity and at last, we became successful today,” Manna said.
Speaking at the briefing, Barrister Mainul Hosein said, the country is being forced to go the violent ways, clashes and bloodshed in a bid to show strength. The government is not ready to listen to reasons and reach an understanding. The demand of free and fair election is the most reasonable for a peaceful solution of the present crisis.
It is disgraceful that after 47 years of independence we are still fighting for our right to vote freely to choose our government freely.
It is frustrating that the government using police power as their strength to suppress people’s power and deny them of their fights.
We are not for or against any party but the people must have their right to elect a government of their own in a free and fair election.
The people see hopelessness everywhere and this unity of leaders under the leadership of Dr Kamal Hossain is seen as a sign of hope for the people for saving the nation from oppression and injustices.
Barrister Hosein wished the leaders of the National United Front all success and called upon the leaders to remain committed to the cause and not disappoint the people. The people are united, they need leadership to be united.
BNP leader Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, “We are committed to make a government for the people that is why we all need to be united to implement our seven-point demand.”
Barrister Moudud Ahmed said, “We need a unity to oust this autocratic government, so we are happy that finally we become successful to make a unity.”
