The regulator of telecom sector–BTRC is set to adopt a zero tolerance policy against illegal VoIP business soon, source said.
“We will not spare anyone involved in the illegal VoIP business as the government has vowed to show zero tolerance in this regard,” Faizur Rahman Chowdhury, Posts and Telecommunication Secretary said to The New Nation recently.
He also has vowed to crack down on the illegal use of Internet Protocol (IP) to carry voice calls.
“If the regulator traces any SIM being used for VoIP (voice over internet protocol) calls, the user of it will be fined $50 for the offence,” he added.
Recently an impromptu press conference on illegal international call termination also held at Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) office in the city where BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood said that a large number of international calls are being made recently through OTT (Over the top) technology, which are not accounted and that was why the volume of traditional international calls has seen a decrease.
“If we (BTRC) locate any operator involved in this, we pass the information to the authorities concerned. The government takes the final decision in this regard,” he added. According to the BTRC, the country records approximately 70-80 million minutes of international calls in a day.
On the other hand, a day long program of “Bangladesh LTE Summit 2016” will be held today to mitigate the barrier of using Internet Protocol.
BTRC and Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) jointly arranged the program at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the city.
State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Division Tarana Halim, MP, Ma Mingqiang, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh and Johan Frisell, Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh would be present.
